As an assistant at the University of Iowa, Lou Holtz coached in his first game.

In his first game as head coach of the New York Jets, Lou Holtz lost to the Cleveland Browns. After losing 9 of his next 12 games, he resigned and never again coached in the NFL.

Lou Holtz coached Notre Dame to a national football championship by defeating West Virginia University 34-21 in the Fiesta Bowl.
