John McCue planted churches in Lewisburg, Union, and Spring Creek.

The Presbyterian general Assembly adopted a policy to send missionaries to the American frontier settlements to form new congregations.

The Committee on Missions of the Synod of Virginia sent John McElhenney as a Presbyterian evangelist in Greenbrier and Monroe counties
1819
Henry Ruffner organized two Presbyterian congregations from which came Kanawha Salines in Malden and the Kanawha Church of Charleston
1841
Henry Ruffner gathered with other western Virginians at a convention in Clarksburg and allied for a system of free public schools
1871
McElhenney died as pastor of the Old Stone Presbyterian Church of Lewisburg.
