Enjoy an evening of cartoons that blur the lines between live-action and animation. Visual effects artists and animators use the term “rotoscoping” for a variety of techniques for creating animated effects from live-action footage. Some purists decry rotoscoping as “tracing.” Bob Sabiston (who developed software used for Richard Linklater’s Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly animated features) defends the approach: “…it’s just very pleasing, I think, for people to recognize the very real motion and real expressions, but then have this added layer of an artist’s sensibility…” Is rotoscoping for tracers or artists? Before you judge, you can try rotoscoping for yourself. Live action + your imagination = amazing animation. (This workshop is a demonstration of rotoscoping, computers are not provided)
