Archives and History Thursday Lecture: West Virginia Songs

On June 18, 2015, John Lilly will present “West Virginia Songs,” at the Thursday evening lecture in the Archives and History Library in the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

John Lilly is an award-winning songwriter who is also recognized as an accomplished vocalist and song stylist. He is especially known for his mastery of the early country music styles of Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams. Since 2000, Lilly has recorded six solo CDs.

A 1996 graduate of Davis & Elkins College, Lilly recently retired as editor/folklife director for Goldenseal magazine, a position he had held since 1997. He previously was a tour guide at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tennessee, and a former associate editor for the Old-Time Herald magazine. He is the editor of the book Mountains of Music: West Virginia Traditional Music from Goldenseal, and a contributor to the Grove Encyclopedia of American Music, The West Virginia Encyclopedia, the Encyclopedia of Appalachia, and the Country Music Encyclopedia.
