Caption: At Dunlap's Creek, the team took their boat out of the water. From there, they hauled it and all of their provisions over the mountains. They were searching for the most direct route for a turnpike through the mountians from the mouth of Dunlap's Creek to the Greenbrier River. Marshall believed that by the "removing of earth" to make a passage more level, a turnpike through the mountains was possible.
