Black Walnut Festival

2019 will be the 65th year the City of Spencer has hosted the West Virginia Black Walnut Festival. The BWF begins in full on the second Thursday of October every year and features a huge food court, live music, a carnival, craft show, art show, agriculture show, quilt show, kid’s day parade, grand parade, flea market, band competition, livestock show and sale, shooting competition, baking competition, flower show, and many more exhibitions and performances! St. Albans History and Mystery Tour

Please join us for our second annual St. Albans History and Mystery Tour on October 12 from 5-9 p.m. You’ll learn about the town’s fascinating history and local legends surrounding the town. There will be costumed actors at 8 locations. Live music and refreshments will be provided. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children (children under 3 are free). Morgan's Kitchen Fall Festival

The 16th Annual Morgan’s Kitchen Fall Festival, sponsored by the St. Albans Historical Society, will be Saturday, October 12, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at historic Morgan’s Kitchen, located along MacCorkle Ave. in St. Albans. Activities will include apple butter making, cabin tours, pioneer re-enactors, arts and crafts, hit-miss engines and old time music. Baked goods, drinks and hot dogs are also available by the Ladies of St. Albans. Apple butter is available for purchase. There is no charge for this event and plenty of parking is available. Rebecca Harding Davis

On Saturday, October 26, 2019, Rebekah Karelis and Margaret Brennan will present “Rebecca Harding Davis” in the Archives and History Library at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The program will begin at 3 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Rebecca Harding Davis is an iconic literary figure best known for her gritty short story, “Life in the Iron Mills,” set in Wheeling, West Virginia. A pioneering writer of literary realism, she and her husband, L. Clarke Davis, worked for progressive social causes such as mental illness and the marginalized. Her nationally recognized family, including son, writer Richard Harding Davis, helped shape the culture of late nineteenth-century literature and journalism.
Rebekah Karelis is a native West Virginian who currently calls Wheeling home. When not writing, the historian collects books, old buildings, and furniture that she never seems to find the time to restore. She works with her partner, Sarel Venter, in restoring West Virginia’s old places through their contracting company, Adventures in Elegance, LLC.
Wheeling native Margaret Brennan has a master’s degree in history and a certificate in public history from West Virginia University. She has taught social studies, worked in archival administration and undertaken special historical projects. Her areas of interest include the American Civil War, Irish history, and slavery and the Underground Railroad.

Wheeling’s Confederate Unit, the Shriver Grays

— Wheeling, Ohio
The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable is presenting a special lecture series this year to coincide with the Wheeling 250 observance.
The roundtable’s series is exploring the theme of Wheeling During the Civil War. The programs are free and open to the public.
Nine talks will be offered at 6:30 p.m. on specified Mondays in the auditorium of the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St.
The roundtable’s regular meetings will be conducted after the lectures. The group will not meet in September or December.
In addition to the lecture series, the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable is organizing a special event on Memorial Day.
The dates and topics for the lectures are as follows:
- Oct. 28 — “Wheeling’s Confederate Unit, the Shriver Grays,” presented by Gerry Reilly.
- Nov. 25 — “Pro and Con Wheeling Newspapers During the War,” presented by Laker.
The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable will hold a Memorial Day walk through Greenwood Cemetery, beginning at 9 a.m. May 27. Participants will mark the graves of veterans from both sides of the conflict.

Halloween Bash 2019

The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History will host a Halloween Bash on Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The Halloween Bash is free and open to the public. All guests are encouraged to dress up in their favorite costume or Halloween attire.
The Great Hall will be decorated with a gnarly-toothed monster, spider webs, an evil pumpkin man, bats, creepy critter eyes and scary trees. Kids can enjoy playing an array of seasonal games, including the spider web walk, mummy wrap and Halloween bean bag tosses.
Bethany Cline, Charleston actress and deputy curator for the department, will regale visitors with ghost stories and other tales of the macabre, including “The Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything” and “The Widow’s Broom” in the Library Commission’s reference library.
Prizes for best boy’s and girl’s costume will be awarded in three age categories. Fifth grade students and younger are eligible for prizes.
Although costumes are optional, shoes and other cloaking attire are required. All visitors will be treated to light refreshments and holiday music like “The Monster Mash,” “Werewolves of London” and “Season of the Witch.”
