  A Civil War Christmas in Shepherdstown weekend, December 4-7

  Presented by the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War, the Shepherd Foundation, and the History Department of Shepherd University

  Both the Union encampment in front of McMurran and the CSA camp in front of Trinity’s chapel across from the GTM Center will welcome visitors and their questions anytime on Friday evening, throughout Saturday, and early Sunday morning as they strike their camps. They will discuss the everyday lives of soldiers, their equipment, their food, etc.

  Public history students will be on the streets, in restaurants and shops, and stationed in the GTM Center. Among the characters they will present are common soldiers from both the North and the South, a nurse, housewives and young single women, and workers of Shepherdstown. The students will actively engage with the public while staying firmly in the 19th century.

  Shepherdstown restaurants and bars will offer special menus and or drinks, inspired by The George Tyler Moore Center’s Civil War Christmas. Those places with special menu offerings will have a GTM Center notice in their window.

  The students are also writing scholarly papers on a wide variety of subjects which will be available for public viewing at the GTM Center.

  Christmas ornaments, toys and games, and musket forms will be for sale at the GTM Center.

  Public history students will conduct tours of the GTM Center with an emphasis on the history of the building, the history of the GTM Center, and the work of the Center in the past and today.

  Let the holiday spirit shine with Seasons of Light, the Annual Holiday Gala evening concert on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. and a family matinee performance on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. in the Frank Center Theater on the campus of Shepherd University.

  This warm, inspiring, and humorous holiday musical tradition at Shepherd University weaves stories and poetry about light in a season of reflection throughout history and culture with a rich tapestry of musical offerings. The Seasons of Light Holiday Gala will feature performances by the Shepherd University Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Scott Hippensteel, the Shepherd Jazz Ensemble directed by Dr. Kurtis Adams, and under the direction of Dr. Erik Jones with narration by Dr. Rob Tudor, the Chamber Singers, Camerata Singers, Men’s Choir, and Concert Choir,.

  The Sunday matinee will be a special treat for children and their families. In addition to the concert performance, there will be a Sing-along led by Shepherd Music Department chair Dr. Rob Tudor, an Instrument “Petting Zoo” for all ages hosted by Shepherd University music fraternities Eta Tau Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota and Xi Epsilon Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and a special guest appearance by Santa Claus!

  Now in its 22nd year, Joy to the World is an annual live performance holiday jazz program hosted by pianist Bob Thompson and produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting. In addition to a distinguished solo career as the leader of the Charleston-based Bob Thompson Unit, Thompson has also been a member of the Mountain Stage band since 1991.

  Singer Mollie O’Brien, a native of Wheeling, WV, was exposed to music of every stripe, from performances by the Wheeling Symphony to concerts by Count Basie, Ray Charles, and the Beatles. She listened to singers — Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins, Bonnie Raitt and Dinah Washington, Streisand, Sinatra, and Betty Carter — and took voice lessons. Later, with her brother, Tim, she performed in church and at coffeehouses. There have been any number of collaborations, most notably the Grammy-winning True Life Blues: The Songs of Bill Monroe (Sugar Hill) with a stellar bunch of bluegrass greats. For the past few years, Mollie has worked with Garrison Keillor and Robin & Linda Williams as the Hopeful Gospel Quartet, with her own five-piece band, and as a duo with husband Rich Moore. She’s been a frequent guest on Mountain Stage since 1985.

• West Virginia Youth Symphony Winter Concert

  West Virginia Youth Symphony will hold its annual Winter Concert this Sunday, December 14th, 2014 at 3:00 pm at the Scottish Rite Temple on Capitol Street.
