• Archives and History Thursday Lecture: West Virginia Voices of War

  November 06, 2014 — Charleston, Kanawha

  On Thursday, November 6, 2014, author, journalist, and documentarian Eric Douglas will present “West Virginia Voices of War: Oral Histories from West Virginia War Veterans” in the Archives and History Library in the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

  West Virginia Voices of War is a documentary weaving together the thoughts of 46 West Virginia war veterans on leaving for war and fighting to get back home afterward. The documentary includes veterans from World War II to Afghanistan. Douglas will show excerpts from the documentary and discuss recording oral histories.

  Douglas has a degree in journalism from Marshall University and a certificate in the documentary arts from Duke University. He spent fifteen months interviewing West Virginia war veterans, collecting fifty hours of oral history material that he used in the making of the documentary West Virginia Voices of War. He is the author of Common Valor (2013), the companion book to his documentary. Douglas also has written a series of adventure novels, children’s books, and short stories.

• West Virginia Veterans in Iraq and Afghanistan

  November 11, 2014 — Charleston, Kanawha WVHC Event

  On Tuesday, November 11, 7p.m. at the WVSU Capitol Center, 123 Summers Street, Charleston, Shirley White, President of the WV Chapter of the Gold Star Mothers will discuss West Virginia Veterans. Following her lecture will be a rough cut viewing of 37 Fallen, a film about the 37 veterans from West Virginia that have lost their lives serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

• Archives and History Thursday Lecture: West Virginia Rosie the Riveter Program

  November 13, 2014 — Charleston, Kanawha

  On November 13, 2014, Anne Montague and three former Rosie the Riveters will present “The West Virginia Rosie the Riveter Program: A Model for America” at the Thursday evening lecture in the Archives and History Library of the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

  The West Virginia Rosie the Riveter Program was begun by Thanks! Plain and Simple, Inc. During World War II, six million women worked on the home front, but very little had been done to capture these women’s stories so that the public would know who they are and honor them.

  The Rosie Program has achieved solid success. In Phase I, the emphasis was on West Virginia Rosies. Fifteen projects have been created with Rosies, including locating and interviewing Rosies, creating parks, and designing quilts. Earlier this year, a building in Cabell County was named “The Rosie the Riveter Building.” National media and communities see the West Virginia Rosie the Riveter Project as a model for America, and Phase II will launch a National Rosie the Riveter Movement by Memorial Day, 2015—seventy years after the end of World War II.

  On Novovember 13, the program will focus on knowing real Rosies. Three Rosies are expected to tell their stories, and a photographic summary of all projects done in West Virginia with the help of Rosies will be available. In addition, parts of the documentary film sponsored by Thanks! Plain and Simple, “We Pull Together,” Rosie the Riveters Then and Now, which features 31 West Virginia Rosies, will be shown.

• Amicus Curiae Lecture Series: American Emperor: “Ballot Bedlam”

• Archives and History Thursday Lecture: Firearms throughout West Virginia's Early History

  November 20, 2014 — Charleston, Kanawha

  On November 20, 2014, Jim Mitchell will present “Firearms throughout West Virginia’s Early History” at the Thursday evening lecture in the Archives and History Library of the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

  Mitchell’s discussion will begin with early flintlocks and end with some of the later cartridge rifles and shotguns. His talk will focus primarily on civilian muzzle loading percussion cap lock rifles that were made by hand working gunsmiths and were either made in West Virginia or gravitated to the state and used here. Mitchell will have several period weapons on display.

  Mitchell is the curator of the West Virginia State Museum in The Culture Center in Charleston. As a professional decorative arts and technological history curator for 50 years, he has worked for the state museums in Wisconsin, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, as well as at The Bennington (Vt.) Museum and the defunct Carborundum Museum of Ceramics in Niagara Falls, New York. He has also been a museum director twice. He has a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, of which he is a native. He also received a master of arts degree from the University of Delaware in the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture and a master of science degree in public administration from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. In his spare time, he is a woodworker and an amateur musician, singing and playing bass instruments.

  Brought to you by the galleries and art-related businesses of downtown Charleston, West Virginia the ArtWalk is the showcase of the city’s thriving art scene. The ArtWalk happens ten months of the year (March through December) and typically on the third Thursday of the month (except in November on the Friday after Thanksgiving). All ArtWalks are from 5 pm to 8 pm.

  The 2014 ArtWalk season will be bringing you new venues, exciting special events and the best of local, regional and nationally recognized artists.
