• From the Burning of Chambersburg to the Battle of Moorefield

  March 04, 2014 — Charleston, Kanawha

  On March 4, 2014, Rick Wolfe will present “From the Burning of Chambersburg to the Battle of Moorefield” at the Tuesday evening lecture in the Archives and History Library in the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

  In the summer of 1864, General Jubal Early moved his Confederate army down the Shenandoah Valley and east to threaten Washington, DC. His mission was to create confusion and draw Union soldiers and resources away from General Ulysses S. Grant’s campaign to destroy General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Early dispatched two cavalry brigades under the command of General John McCausland to burn Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Afterwards, Union cavalry under the command of William W. Averell pursued the town burners. They caught up with the Confederates in Hardy County, resulting in the Battle of Moorefield.

  A native of Morgantown, Richard A. Wolfe spent 26 years in the Marine Corps, retiring as a major in 1998. Since then, he has worked in the information technology field with the Department of Justice and in December 2013 retired from Lockheed Martin. Wolfe has been a long-time student of the American Civil War, especially as it relates to West Virginia. He is associated with the Clarksburg and Morgantown Civil War Roundtables, is president of Rich Mountain Battlefield Foundation, and is a volunteer on the Civil War Task Force for West Virginia’s Division of Tourism, which is responsible for West Virginia Civil War Trails. In June 2009, Wolfe was appointed by Governor Manchin to the West Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission. He is the author of a book in the Images of America series titled West Virginia in the Civil War.

  On March 4, the library will close at 5:00 p.m. and reopen at 5:45 p.m. for participants only. • "Hollow: the Film"

  On March 7, interactive documentary filmmaker Elaine McMillion Sheldon presents “Hollow – the Film” at 7:30 p.m. in Eshleman Science Center room 400. The production tells the story of McDowell County, W.Va., through the eyes of its residents. It traces the county’s history from boom and bust economies, and challenges and triumphs of every size. The event also offers visitors the opportunity to record their thoughts on West Virginia via a story booth. More information

• Amicus Curiae Lecture Series on Constitutional Democracy

  On Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at 7 p.m. at the Marshall University Foundation Hall, the Marshall University 2013-2014 “Amicus Curiae Lecture Series on Constitutional Democracy” continues with a lecture by David Rudovsky, a senior fellow and professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Rudovsky has published extensively in the area of civil rights of the accused and racial bias in the criminal justice system, among other topics. He will discuss whether the United States justice system is just and how we could create a fairer system.

• Maple Syrup Festival

  March 15, 2014 to March 16, 2014 — Pickens, Randolph

  In late winter, here in our mountains surrounding Pickens, when nights are freezing and days begin to warm, it’s maple sugaring time!

  Next, we collect and transport the sap to a sugar house where it is boiled down in large evaporating pans making the thick, golden syrup. It takes about 45 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup. The hot syrup is then filtered and packed into storage jugs.

  West Virginia has a long history of sugar making. The Indians made syrup first. They threw hot rocks into hollowed-out logs that were filled with sap. The early settler quickly learned to make the sweet stuff and use it as their main source of sugar. Today, maple syrup and sugar are widely used in cooking, baking, and as topping.

  Join us for a full weekend of activities celebrating this tradition each year on the third full weekend in March! The 2014 festival takes place March 15 & 16.

• Writing Daily Commentary: Little Lecture by Hoppy Kercheval

  The Little Lecture Series of the West Virginia Humanities Council kicks off at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, with West Virginia MetroNews commentator and radio host Hoppy Kercheval presenting “Writing Daily Commentary.” Kercheval joined West Virginia Radio Corporation in 1976 and was a founding father of MetroNews. Since that time he has become one of the leading broadcasters in West Virginia. He created and hosts MetroNews Talkline, a two-hour long daily radio current affairs and interview show aired around the state.

  In addition to his radio responsibilities, Kercheval writes a daily online commentary on a variety of subjects for wvmetronews.com and that will be the focus of his talk. He is also well known for his many years as a key member of the Mountaineer Sports Network broadcast team. Kercheval has received a number of honors including the Mel Burka Award presented by the West Virginia Broadcasters Association to the state’s top broadcaster and an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from West Virginia Wesleyan College.
