Flood of 1878

A hurricane brought heavy rains to the state. Flooding occurred on the New, Greenbrier, Gauley, and Kanawha rivers.

Flooding occurred over a three-day period. A minister in Hinton wrote: “17 houses were swept away yesterday and last night. Fences and outhouses all gone.”
