Boone County was formed March 11, 1847, from parts of Logan, Kanawha, and Cabell counties by an act of the Virginia legislature.
Madison is the county seat of Boone County. Originally called Boone Court House, the town was renamed about 1865, presumably for James Madison, the fourth president of the United States.
The coal town of Nellis was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
The Coal River basin drains much of southern West Virginia.

Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College has a campus in Foster. The college serves Boone, Lincoln, Logan, McDowell, Mingo, and Wyoming counties in West Virginia, and Martin and Pike counties in Kentucky
