Doddridge County was formed February 4, 1845, from parts of Harrison, Lewis, Ritchie, and Tyler counties. It was named for Philip Doddridge, a Western Virginia congressman, state legislator, and member of the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829–30.
West Union, the county seat of Doddridge County, sits alongside Middle Island Creek. The area was first settled in the late 1700s by James Caldwell, who owned 20,000 acres of land that included present West Union."
The Center Point Covered Bridge was built between 1888 and 1890. It spans Pike’s Fork of McElroy Creek.
