Pierpont Community and Technical College

Pierpont Community and Technical College is an independent member of the Community and Technical College System of West Virginia. It previously was part of Fairmont State University, which established a community college component in 1974.

In 2000, the West Virginia Legislature mandated that Fairmont State College Community and Technical College seek separate accreditation, which was earned in 2003 from the Higher Learning Commission, North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Though subsequent legislation allowed the two institutions to briefly share accreditation, they were completely separated in 2008. In 2006 legislation provided for a new name for the Fairmont State University Community and Technical College. In the future it was to be known as Pierpont Community and Technical College, named for Francis H. Pierpont. Pierpont, who had lived in Fairmont, was the governor of the Reorganized Government of Virginia during the the Civil War. Pierpont Community and Technical College, which generally represents a 13-county region of central and northern West Virginia, also has campuses in Sutton, Bridgeport, Clarksburg, and Morgantown. The total enrollment in fall 2022 was 1,460.
