Prospect Rock, 1,300 feet high, located on Cacapon Mountain in Morgan County west of Berkeley Springs, overlooks the juncture of the Potomac River and Cacapon River and the states of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. The well-known landmark was renowned for its fine view as early as the 18th century. George Washington was a frequent visitor, traveling there with his wife, Lord Fairfax, and others.
Prospect Rock, an Oriskany sandstone cape in an area known also as the Cacapon Rocks, is reached by hiking through Cacapon State Park. There is a nearby highway overlook on State Route 9. A roadside marker states that National Geographic magazine rates this scene among America’s outstanding "beauty spots.’’ The magazine published a photograph of the view in its August 1940 issue.
