There is a lot of evidence that disproves the idea mercer county was uninhibited at the time the white settlers moved in. The mercer county court house has a relief along the north and south walls above the height of the doors which show the native Americans that live in the region ending at the time the court house was built in the 1930s. There are clear indications that native Americans lived in the region but no actual indication that European settlers moved into mercer county until the mid 1800s. The clay family did not remain in mercer county after the family was attacked and it was not for decades that any other European family moved into mercer county and stayed. The settlers appeared to be Native American tribes which joined the original population. In fact there is no indication that mercer county was ever not inhabited.
