Bessie's Blues at Tamarack
November 03, 2018
— Beckley, Raleigh
Lady D returns to the Tamarack stage with her one-woman show, “Bessie’s Blues;” the abbreviated production of her original play, “The Lady and the Empress.” Based on the life and music of the Empress of the Blues, “Bessie’s Blues” differs from the original show only in the length and the use of only one musician. Saturday, November 3, 2018, 1 PM – 3:30 PM
Relive the 20’s and 30’s along with Bessie as she recalls life on the “Chitlin’ Circuit” and the Jim Crow South. Hear tunes that may sound familiar as they have been covered by many artists over the past almost 100 years. Songs like “Dirty No-Gooders Blues,” “I Ain’t Got Nobody” and “Gimme A Pigfoot.” are staples of the Bessie Smith catalogue.
Bessie Smith earned the title of “Empress of the Blues” by virtue of her forceful vocal delivery and command of the genre.
Her singing displayed a soulfully phrased, boldly delivered and nearly definitive grasp of the blues. In addition, she was an all-around entertainer who danced, acted and performed comedy routines with her touring company. She was the highest-paid black performer of her day and arguably reached a level of success greater than that of any African-American entertainer before her.
This event is FREE to the public!

The Beach Boys - Brian Wilson, Al Jardine & Blondie Chaplin LIVE: Marshall Artists Series
November 06, 2018
— Huntington, Cabell
Tuesday, November 6 at 7:30 PM – 10:30 PM
Keith Albee Performing Arts Center
925 4th Avenue, Huntington, West Virginia 25701
The Keith-Albee will be filled with the sounds of summer as Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys perform hits we all know and love. This tour features Wilson and his band, including longtime Beach Boys members Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin, performing tunes from throughout their career.
American songwriter, producer, arranger and musician, co-founder and leader of The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson is a deeply revered figure in popular music, the main creative force behind some of the most cherished recordings in rock history. He was barely out of his teens when he started to make gold albums featuring classics like “Surfer Girl,” “In My Room,” “I Get Around,” and “Don’t Worry Baby.” Wilson’s ground-breaking work on the album, Pet Sounds, and the single, “Good Vibrations,” re-wrote the rules of what a pop album or single could be. His solo record SMiLE, released in 2004, had been anticipated by music fans since the late 1960s.
Wilson is a Kennedy Center Honors recipient, a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, and a multiple GRAMMY Award winner. With the Beach Boys, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and honored with The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.

November 07, 2018
— Charleston, Kanawha
