Archives and History Tuesday Lecture: History of the West Virginia Supreme Court

On Tuesday, June 2, 2015, Rory Perry will discuss the “History of the West Virginia Supreme Court” in the Archives and History Library of the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Since 1863, the 76 justices of West Virginia’s highest court have carried out the duties of the judicial branch in a varied social, industrial, and political environment. Until recently, the activities of the judicial branch were of little interest to those outside of the legal community. Through careful study of the court’s original records, Perry has compiled a compelling and original visual timeline of the court’s history. Using this timeline as a reference, Perry will discuss significant early events, including the post-Civil War test oath cases and the martial law cases during the Paint Creek labor strikes, and provide a birds-eye view of the changing makeup of the court.
Rory L. Perry II is the 13th person to serve as Clerk of the Court since the State was created, and he has served in that position since 2000. He received his B.A. in English from Marshall University and his J.D. from the West Virginia University College of Law. Perry recently served as President of the National Conference of Appellate Court Clerks.

Elk River Festival

The Buffalo Creek Recreational Trail is set to open during the Elk River Festival, June 5-6. The 22-mile trail begins at Pisgah, across Elk River from the town of Clay, and continues on through Dundon, Adair, Cressmont, Swandale, and ends at Widen. Festival programming includes a Cherokee Indian exhibition and lecture and demonstration of old time dance and music by Mack Samples on June 6 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. For more information contact Roberta Faile at faile@carolina.rr.com.

2015 Bayer Symphony Sunday

Free and open to the public, the 2015 Bayer Symphony Sunday celebrates the 33rd year of the event and will draw more than 7,000 residents from throughout the region to a weekend-long celebration of music and activities for the entire family! The Annual Observance of the Opening of the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum at Watoga State Park, near Marlinton, West Virginia will be held Saturday, June 13, 2015 at the Activity Room at beautiful Watoga State Park. All CCC Vets, supporters of Watoga State Park, CCC Families, CCC Friends, and the General Public is invited. There is no charge. It is Covered Dish. Blue-Gray Highway Dedication

US Route 33 in WV has been designated the Blue-Gray Highway in recognition of the many Civil War events in the region. Dedication activities will include demonstrations by Wise’s Legion Civil War re-enactors, the Tower Street Stringband, Mary Lincoln of History Alive! and a viewing of the movie “Averell’s Raiders and the 35th Star.” Events will be on the lawn of the Jackson County Courthouse and the adjacent Alpine Theatre. Archives and History Thursday Lecture: West Virginia Songs

On June 18, 2015, John Lilly will present “West Virginia Songs,” at the Thursday evening lecture in the Archives and History Library in the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
John Lilly is an award-winning songwriter who is also recognized as an accomplished vocalist and song stylist. He is especially known for his mastery of the early country music styles of Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams. Since 2000, Lilly has recorded six solo CDs.
A 1996 graduate of Davis & Elkins College, Lilly recently retired as editor/folklife director for Goldenseal magazine, a position he had held since 1997. He previously was a tour guide at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tennessee, and a former associate editor for the Old-Time Herald magazine. He is the editor of the book Mountains of Music: West Virginia Traditional Music from Goldenseal, and a contributor to the Grove Encyclopedia of American Music, The West Virginia Encyclopedia, the Encyclopedia of Appalachia, and the Country Music Encyclopedia.

The Council is again joining the Craik-Patton House and Historic Glenwood Foundation to host the open houses as part of West Virginia Day observances, and the public is invited to tour the National Historic Register properties. The MacFarland-Hubbard House will be open from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., and the Craik-Patton House will host visitors from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m on Friday, June 19. 24th annual Old Central City Days

Set to run Friday through Sunday, June 19-21, is the 24th annual Old Central City Days featuring everything from the Gate City Gunslingers and a steady stream of live music to a vintage fashion show, costumed characters for the kids, an antiques fair and more than 40 arts, crafts, food and game booths.
Central City exploded from farmland to a population of more than 2,500 in just one year. Once a city to itself, Central City lasted from 1893 to 1909 before it was annexed into the city of Huntington.

Downtown Charleston ArtWalk

Now in its 13th year, Downtown Charleston ArtWalk is a free self-guided walking tour of Charleston’s shops, galleries and businesses featuring regional art and performances. Typically held the third Thursday of each month, participating shops and organizations extend their hours for browsing, shopping and mingling.
Participating shops are located along Quarrier, Capitol and Lee streets in Downtown Charleston and feature a variety of art – from paintings and sculptures to photography and music. Attendees can stroll along at their own pace, dip in and out of stores and stop off along the way for a bite to eat at a downtown restaurant. This well-loved family-friendly event takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. and attracts art aficionados as well as folks who just want to get out and try something new.

Little Lecture: Frontier Forts

The 2015 Little Lecture Series kicks off on March 22 when Professor Michael Woods of Marshall University presents “West Virginians and the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln.” Poet Laureate Marc Harshman lectures on April 26, followed by a May 31 program with researcher Susan Shumaker who works with filmmaker Ken Burns. Archeologist Stephen McBride wraps up the 2015 series on June 28 with his lecture on frontier forts in West Virginia.
Seating is limited for the programs and people interested in attending should confirm that seats are available by calling 304-346-8500.
All Little Lectures are presented on Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. in the MacFarland-Hubbard House, located at 1310 Kanawha Boulevard, East, in Charleston. Admission is $10 and includes a reception after the program.

Archeology of West Virginia’s Frontier Forts: Little Lecture

Archeology of West Virginia’s Frontier Forts: Stephen McBride
Recent archeological excavations of eighteenth century frontier forts in present-day West Virginia have allowed a better understanding of the entire frontier defensive system and the historical context in which it developed. Archeologist Stephen McBride will share his discoveries from digs at Point Pleasant, Greenbrier County, and other Mountain State sites.
McBride is an historical archeologist with a special interest in 18th century frontier settlement and the Civil War. He holds a Bachelor degree in anthropology from Beloit College and Masters and Doctorate degrees in anthropology from Michigan State University. McBride serves as Director of Interpretation and Archaeology at Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park in Jessamine County, Kentucky and is manager of McBride Preservation Services, LLC. He has, along with his wife Dr. Kim McBride, directed excavations on many 18th and 19th century sites in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia. He has written numerous articles for journals, edited volumes and reports on archeology. With his wife Kim he has published Frontier Defense: Colonizing Contested Areas in the Greenbrier Valley of West Virginia and Frontier Forts in West Virginia: Historical and Archaeological Explorations.
