EventsShare "Frances Benjamin Johnston: West Virginia Icon" ExhibitNovember 01, 2020 — December 01, 2020 Parkersburg, Wood The “Frances Benjamin Johnston: West Virginia Icon” exhibit is about Grafton native Frances Benjamin Johnston, who was a self-made photographer in the late Victorian and early 20th century. While Johnston photographed celebrities such as Mark Twain and the Roosevelts, her most enduring legacy is her historic preservation work doing photographic surveys of the American South, funded by the Carnegie Corporation and administered by the Library of Congress. Our exhibit consists of 26 enlarged photographs rarely seen outside the Library of Congress with explanatory captions. The exhibit can be displayed on the wall, easels or tabletops, along with some books of her photography including a first edition. The exhibit is free and open to the public; a web-based version is going live soon for those who cannot attend in person. Come see the exhibit throughout November 2020!
